The Little Things

Of a morning I have started to get quite the routine going.

I used to decide what I was wearing in the last 10 minute slot before I had to get out the door but this often resulted in a day where I felt...I don't know...below par. Unsatisfied with my garms and general 'look.'
Hate those days.

Now what I do is either the night before or as soon as I get up I lay out what I'm going to wear, see if it 'goes' and alter/adorn it accordingly.

Today I started with plain, old denim jeans and a leopard chiffon shirt I've had for quite a while now.
I went over to my jewellery box and pulled out the biggest gold necklace I could find, and gold hand harness. The multi ring finger is one I left on my desk at work a few days ago so popped on when I got here this morning.

I then dragged open my 'heeled' shoes container and right on top were the perfect stacks to compliment the shirt I had set out.

I'm having a somewhat grey and pastel moment with my nails and just bought the baby blue colour from Barry M yesterday so had to try it out ASAP. I really like the result although it took 4/5 coats to achieve this - it's very thin; but if you have the time, well worth it.

I also have my morning brew at home out of my favourite cowboy mug from Cath Kidston - it just makes me smile.

Here's some shots for you to peruse - which are your favourite details?

For me it's the little things that make my day.

Fashion Conscious

They've gone and done it again.

I don't know why I even shop anywhere else. Time and time again they have it in the bag. (And by 'it' I mean garments in exchange for my life savings.)

What am I referring to? H&M..and their new Concsious Collection - to be precise. An entire collection dedicated to making a better future for sustainable fashion - basically responsibly sourced products from responsibly run production lines. Refreshing, non?

I only popped in to buy my usual stock up of Basics tank tops before the summer begins and there it was. All laid out in front of me glistening (in my eyes) and urging me to come a little closer and 'just look.'

I didn't 'just look.' I never do.

A flurry of hangers, baskets and changing rooms later and I had newness. In a shiny plastic carrier, of course.

I strode home with that glow of 'I have fresh and exciting things to create looks around now' and quickly got to work.

I opted for the hot pink lace knee length pencil skirt and a pink, split to the thigh, silk-mix maxi skirt. I'm feeling pink of late - I like the way it looks when teamed with my heavy metal jewellery and, usually, Converse high tops.

At £14.99 this is a bargain..hence the second buy.

There is no online image of the maxi skirt (no idea why) so I will try and get a good shot uploaded this eve.

But for now here are my other favourites and what I'd buy if I had never ending pennies to chuck at sparkly, new garms.

Is it bad I want to wear these together...at the same time?!

Seriously. Most beautiful high street evening wear award goes to H&M.
These two are...oh, just delightful in person. I almost proposed to them when I saw them in store yesterday.

In fact I might visit them again this evening.

What do you think to the new collection? Rocking your world or your boat?

Friday

What Lies Within.

Yesterday I had a very special delivery to work.

Not long ago I turned 26 and my parents asked what I wanted. For a long time I've been in search of 'the perfect black bag' and a little while before my birthday I discovered it - at the S/S '12 Mulberry preview evening.

When I mentioned it to them I didn't for a second think they'd help fund it. But they did. And it arrived yesterday. It's safe to say I'm in love.

This morning as I was transferring all my worldly possessions into it I was reminded of an article I'd read in The Telegraph about an exhibition just opened at The Serpentine Art Gallery in London. Artist Hans-Peter Feldman has offered a group of women £400 to spill the contents of their handbags for all to see.

A woman's bag, I think we can all agree, is a veritable jungle of what may appear as junk to the rest of the world but is in fact a collection of items one wouldn't be able to get through the day without. That...and a taboo thing to look through.

With this in mind I decided to empty my new Evelina and share my content with you all...

  • Gloves and umbrella - well, I do live in Manchester, remember.
  • Mulberry tote bag - easy for rolling up and getting out when picking up bits and bats on the way home.
  • Make up - I have this odd fear of someone throwing water in my face and stripping me of my war paint at some point in the day so always have a small kit with me.
  • Fashion mags - high end and high street (a lot of my labels get press in Look so it's a weekly must)
  • Molecule 01 perfume from Liberty
  • Manchester voucher book - who said there's no such thing as a free meal?
  • Purse and contents - small coins, drivers licence, bank card, discount card, gig ticket, dry cleaning ticket, cobbler ticket.
  • iPod - currently on my millionth listen of The Black Key's El Camino
  • Small silver charms - these are, in a way, my most important possession. A gift from a friend, each one means something different and represent my overall well being.
  • Keys

That's pretty much it...but like I said - the bag's a day old. By next week I could have a world map, hammock and some fruit in there for all I know.

What's in yours?

Sneaks

Many moons ago I was about to trek up the Atlas mountains in Morocco when I suddenly realised I was without suitable footwear. I had to make a snap decision purchase in the souks. One of the best sartorial decisions I've ever made.

Aqua Converse All Star high tops. (I'm aware it's highly unlikely they're authentic but they have been incredibly hard wearing and I adore them.)

It's been a long standing love affair but alas...they have started to look their age. A small hole appearing near the ankle was a sign I needed to invest in something new.

I have purposely never washed them as they still have red mud stains on the inner rim of the white rubber from the Moroccan mountain trek and they just mean something to me.

Apart from their ever ageing appearance, vibrant blue isn't always the easiest colour to create an outfit around.

Cue: White Converse All Star high tops!

I got them this past weekend from Selfridges - so I have faith these are at least the real McCoy - and today is their first outing.

Here's how I styled them:

Shoes | Converse@Selfridges
Rubberised leggings | American Apparel
Tunic/Dress | John Zack
(unsure where this is available as mine's from my agency)
Watch | Michael Kors
Necklace | ASOS
Scarf | gift

Today I'm Wearing..

Today is the last day in work this week and with a night out looming I opted for comfortable fashion to get me through the day.

An H&M structured tee I got in the sale for £5, a new ASOS necklace, some Primark heels and a 10 year old pair of River Island jeans. Surely they're vintage now, right?

All topped off with fluro pink lips and nails.

Following yesterdays weather I like to thing of it as April-Shower-Chic.

Happy Easter All!

 Trench Coat | Vintage
Sunglasses | Calvin klein
Top | H&M

Bag | Mulberry
Scarf | gift

Just A Quickie...Picture Book

Tonight my friends, Picture Book, are playing a great gig with The Voyeurist and Ghostcat in London at Hoxton's The Macbeth.

Here they are talking to Wonderland Magazine.

If you're in the area get down and see them - they're incredibly talented, ridiculous fun and I'm so gutted to be missing it.

Alternatively, you could pay the £1,000 (no, I didn't accidentally hit an extra 0) door fee to see them play their weekly gig at The Arts Club.

Yes, they're that good. That said, I know which I'd rather do. Get down there tonight!

Here's a taster:

It That Shall Not Be Named

***Some images updated***

We've all heard the name adaptations - Primani, Prucci, Primada and so on. But how often do people actually use its real name? Not often I'd wager.

In fact other companies are actually making money out of people not wanting to utter the eponym. Last week I turned 26 and a card I received from a close friend was the below. When I laughed and looked a little ashamed at how apparent my snobbishness was she said, "We all do it, that's why it's so funny - you're hardly alone!"

But it got me thinking - most of us go in, and those who say they don't are either genuine millionaires who know nothing of the wonders inside or bare faced liars. Either way be wary of them.

In all honesty it has been some time since I last prowled the rails within. This is mainly because one of the perks of my job is on trend clothing fed to you on a near daily basis at massive discounts. Yes, I do love my job. No, I don't feel guilty for that.

Anyway, I digress.

Last Friday I was having a particularly stressful work day and decided a 20 minute browse of what the corporate monster had to offer might help disconnect my mind from the previous hours worth of tension. So off I strode, ear plugs firmly in - well, let's be honest, in there you're rarely ever more than 5ft from a screaming infant and that is not for me.

A 20 minute whizz round later and I was £73.00 lighter but infinitely happier. It seems disgusting that for that amount you can purchase two pairs of heels, a jacket, a dress and trousers. But you can. And I wanted them. So I did it.

And here is my haul:

Midi dress - plain grey marl jersey, £10. It looks nothing on a hanger and I'm actually disappointed at how my camera image has come out but it's late and I'm too tired to re-shoot but trust me, on it is a different story. Tight to the body up to the gathered waist and then skims the hips and thighs beautifully. I tried an extremely similar one from Topshop - £29 and a best seller for them - but I looked a sack of potatoes in it. This dress, for a fraction of the cost, looks at least twice the price of the Topshop offering. And it comes with the little belt, great on or off the dress.

Next to catch my eye was this boucle beauty. Not the cheapest at £25 but when you look in Zara and see nearly the identical item for £70 you know you're onto a winner. It isn't designed to fasten so sits nicely, tailored at the back, to the body.
The fabric is stunning and the quality feels good - nice and thick, hard-wearing if you will. I especially like the zip pocket detail that sort of punks it up and keeps it from leaning too far towards grandmas-knitting-group-chic.

Then these stunners. For many a post now I've waxed lyrical about this seasons brights and prints and finally I have found a pair of my own to cherish. They're a poly-mix but don't let this put you off - these are mine after a day in the office. They've maintained their shape and remained virtually crease free. For £14 they're an amazing buy. They have a small turn up cuff at the bottom and the peg leg shape is flattering to so many shapes and sizes. Although a word of warning. I am an average size 10 but I couldn't get the waistband done up in these and had to actually get a 12 - the low price would suggest they aren't paying their pattern cutters well.

The trousers have a label inside saying 'co-ordinates' as they also come in shorts and a blazer so if you're wanting the whole head to toe printed look get down there fast -these garms aren't about to hang about.

And last but by no means least my newest and most loved shoes. I had to get them in both colours. They are just so comfortable and for a stiletto heel that's saying something. I wore the black ones today with the printed trousers and a white chiffon shirt. I felt great.

And really that's all fashion is - putting together pieces that make you feel great.

To get all that in 20 minutes I was pleased. But don't think I'm a full convert yet...I had a reusable Celia Birtwell canvas tote stuffed into my handbag and used that as opposed to a billboard sized carrier from....Primark. There, I said it.
